i remember reading the Fabulous Furry Freak Brother magazines that my dad tried to hide, I loved the art work, the colors etc. The biggest influence was my mother and father, my mom always had something to draw or paint with and my dad had a twisted sense of humor. i remember seeing the flying eye ball for the first time, I could not stop drawing it. then I saw Big Daddy's rat fink, my dad was driving truck and they gave away hot wheels and little rat fink statues for every 10 gallons. Rat Fink was every where in my house. I joined the Navy and pulled away from my artisitic love, i never pursued it because it was never the " responsible" thing to do tried once to get into tattoo's but got mixxed up with a bunch of losers who spoiled my desire to pursue art. eventually took a responible job, got married bought a house became trapped in a dull, non-creative job surrounded by ego maniacs that are all about control and power...... then came my daughter, the artisitc flame was/is there, i have begun to relive my youth and i am bound and determined to make sure that my daughter does not get trapped by the " responsible" thing to do. If she wants to be an artist i am going to make sure that there are no road blocks in her way to prevent it. I lament the lost time when I could have been refining my skills, but i look forward to the time i will have with my daughter. i have attached a photo of my daughter and i I did her make up and she did mine.

1966 or 1967 as a punk ass kid in Adelaide South Australia i would say, seeing some things related to Roth arround, that planted the seed you could say, colour,s,designs, monster,s etc really catches a kids imagination.
scince that time to this time its just happily hung arround and had some injection into my hot rods, collecting, and over all,, my facination with and towards weird stuff, wont ever shake it either thats for sure, and days and moments like today when you win x 6 rat fink character,s on e bay for your joint and mates, and to display, its the only friend ,therapist, doctor, partner you need..
PS dont tell my Dart that Yeeks!!!!
i am definatley a 49 year old delinquint and loving it !!!

The day i saw for the first time Rat Fink, one question came to my mind " who made it?". From car to t-shirt, i discovered the fine art of Big Daddy, each creation had no limits in term of creation.
Anyway today when i look at his work, it just remind me to go more far every time i create something.
I read on another website "its not kustom till its done" you were right sir

wow, i'm humbled by peoples stories of their experiences of meeting the great man.. i have never been so fortunate. but i do feel fortunate in the fact that i live this finky world every single day.. when life seems mundane, there is escapism in something that began as seemingly non-descript as a sketch on a napkin.. the anti-mickey counterculture icon rat fink. i don't think that mr. roth truly knew the extent of his influence.. he was way too kool for that, but as for this kid who will never grow up, that influence is my everyday existence... such as many others. thank you big daddy!!!

I think it was 1987 that I met Ed. We were camping out at Bingeman Park in Kitchener Ontario with my first kustom car and in rolls this three wheeled thing . I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention at the time, I was working on my kustom after just arriving myself. My girlfriend at the time (my wife now) said , check out the ratfink coming in here. I turned and much to my disbelief there was BDR and the Fink rolling in with a grey primer Globehopper with darker grey flames(might have even been pencil come to think of it) He was told he could park in the preferred overflow parking, because he didn't have a street rod(those dumb shits!). Anyway, we carry on getting our old car ready to cruise the grounds, take off fo ra tour and come back to find that Ed had set up camp right beside us. I chatted with him about various life altering nonsense, sat around and ate cheese and you know what? I never even asked for an autograph or photo or nothing! Who was the dumb shit this time? I do at least have my memories of a pretty cool guy who jsut plopped down and became my new friend instantly. Never bumped in to Ed again even at all of the shows we used to travel to, too bad.

I can't specifically pinpoint when, or why this fascination overwhelmed me. Something led me to california. I had to show my kar at the ratfink party. I've read more info on BDR than I care to mention in polite conversation. I'm no stalker, simply an old school eccentric. I'm really fortunate, he signed a shirt for me. A true treasure. His work has been the principle inspiration in my thought process.

I was never like the other kids. Big Daddy made me feel that being "different" was OK!! (I'm 58 now and STILL not like the other "kids!")
Spike Comment by Spike on May 22, 2009 at 10:43am
That's what I was thinking also. It was a weird (like that's bad!!) little car. It had a wraparound seat back. Used to do a lot of inboard ski boats similar to it. I should mention the upholsterer was Tom Sterkel of "Tom's Top Shop".
